A very brief history of Reiki.

Reiki is translated as “Universal Life Energy” or Chi. It has its roots in Buddhist and Eastern traditions dating back 2500 years. Dr. Mikaeo Usui, a Buddhist himself living in Japan in the early part of the 20th century, rediscovered it while meditating at his favorite Buddhist temple. Dr. Usui was both a brilliant spiritually cultivated and a practical family man. At some point in his career he served as the Post Master General of Japan. His intention was to promote the well-being and healing of others thus establishing a healing center. It is thought that he initiated between 1000 - 2000 people in Reiki and through his students, helped tens of thousands of people. He also mentored and trained between one and two dozen Reiki Masters including Dr. Chujuiro Hayashi who standardized modern Usui Reiki. Just before WWII in 1937, Mrs. Hawayo Takata a great proponet of Reiki brought the Usui Reiki Center to Hawaii where she was able to spread Reiki throughout the U.S. and to the world at large. The traditional way of learning Reiki is from master to master. This is why some Reiki Masters, such as Master Claire, has a Reiki Master Lineage. While some other current Reiki practitioners receive online Reiki Training and Certification.

Reiki is built on the the holistic understanding that a person’s health and well-being is based on the integration of mind, body and spirit. Today it is used as a complementary therapy that can be administered, with permission of the recipient, either in-person as hands-on therapy or remotely, as distant healing. Reiki Masters who can effectively transfer energy remotely are considered more advanced.
